Chapter 4 It had been a couple of days but they had finally made it to Canada. It had been somewhat hard because the cops were still looking for them and they had to be careful because, although the cops didn’t know who the robber was, it wouldn’t be hard to find them if someone reported a young couple driving out of the country with a trunk load of cash. They were also both happy that they had made sure to have their passports and ID because if they didn’t there was no way they would have been able to cross the border. While they had been gone their friends had been blowing up their cell phones. They were pissed that they just up and left without giving word. Druex and Omari got in a real big argument because Druex was like he couldn’t very well tell Omari where they were. For all he knew the cops could have tapped Omari’s cell or home phone. It was just too risky. Omari got over it, though it took a couple of days and the on going news specials upping the reward for capturing the thief. It was just crazy. When they finally got into Canada Druex decided to put them in a nice hotel. He drove aimlessly, asking people for directions, until he came to a Hilton Hotel. He parked in the lot, grabbed their bags and made his way to the entrance. As they made their way into the building Druex bent his head to the side, and like any male, took in Trish’s behind in her white shorts. His smile grew wide and he confidently walked to the main desk and waited patiently in line so he could get them a room. “Welcome to the Hilton Hotel. How may I help you?” the woman asked. “I want a room that I will inhabit for two days,” Druex replied. The woman began tying things into the computer. “May I have your name and how will you be paying for this?” “The name’s Druex Fredericks and I’ll be paying in cash,” he replied. The woman nodded and said, “The will be three hundred dollars.” Druex pulled out a small knot of cash, as to not look conspicuous, and counted three hundred dollars and handed it to the woman. She processed the transaction and handed him a receipt as well as two keys. He put the keys in his pocket then grabbed his bags and headed to the elevators with Trish in tow. He settled in, well as much as he planned on, and waited until Trish was in the shower before calling the airport and reserving two first class tickets for the Bahamas. Once that was done he left a note for Trish, letting her know that he would be out for a while. Once that was done he grabbed a small book-bag and put about fifty thousand dollars in the bag before leaving the hotel for a bank. Once that was done he left a note for Trish, letting her know that he would be out for a while. Once that was done he grabbed a small book-bag and put about fifty thousand dollars in the bag before leaving the hotel for a bank. It took him a couple of hours but when he left the bank he had a new account set up and had fifty thousand dollars in it. The cool thing about it was that the lady that helped him didn’t even ask questions, it was probably because she was flirting. She just had him fill out the papers, transferred the money in a new account, and gave him a debit card for the account. When he was done he drove around until he found some nice jewelry stores. He didn’t have any jewelry money on him so he was just looking. He saw a lot of things but nothing that caught his eye. He figured that he still had a day and a half to find a nice ring for Trish. Druex was gone again and she momentarily wondered what he was doing. For some reason he was being all secretive and shit and it was bugging her to no end. She shrugged it off and pulled on her velour Rocawear sweats and headed to the gym to get a little exercise in. She had let her hair down a few days ago and it was now in a high pony tail. As she lunges she noticed some of the guys in the gym staring at her. She liked the fact that other guys thought she looked good but she didn’t let it influence anything that she did. It was around noon and Druex found himself in another jewelry store but this one was really nice. They specialized in colored stones and that was a plus to Druex. He wanted Trish to have a ring that no one else would have. He was looking neat and clean in his casual wear and the only thing that stood out on his was his book-bag. “So is there anything that we can interest you in sir?” an older Caucasian guy asked. “Yes…I’m looking for an engagement ring for my girl. I want something different but classy at the same time,” Druex asked. “What’s your price range?” the guy asked. “Money is no object right now. I just want something that my girl would be proud of wearing. If you have that you’ll get your money,” Druex answered. The man looked at him and a smile grew on his face. “Well I’m partial to our blue diamonds. We have quite a nice selection, if I do say so myself.” “Let’s see what you’ve got,” Druex asked. An hour later Druex was looking at this nice ring. It was a Cartier style solitaire 2.02 carat blue pear shaped diamond ring. It had a platinum setting that was encrusted with white diamonds and the blue diamond was also surrounded by white diamonds. It was flawless and perfect. Druex knew immediately that it was the one. “This is the one,” Druex said as he took his eyes off of the ring. “What size is it?” The man picked the ring up off of the satin sheet it was lying in and picked up a silver stick as well. He slid the ring on the stick as far as it could go before placing the stick closer in his line of eye sight. He was quiet for a minute before saying, “It’s a five.” “It’s a perfect fit. So how much is it?” Druex asked as he sat in a seat in the back of the store. The man picked up a calculator and looked at the tag on the ring before punching in some numbers. When he was done he looked up at Druex and said, “It’s six hundred fifty-six thousand five hundred even.” Druex didn’t even think twice and opened his book bag up. He had counted the money last nice and tied a rubber band around every hundred thousand stack and promptly pulled out seven stacks and handed it over to the man who watched wide eyed. “I’ll need a box as well as my change,” Druex said breaking the man out of his reverie. The man quickly counted the money and handed him his change and receipt before boxing the ring and placing it in a bag with the store’s insignia on it and handing it to Druex. Druex put everything in his bag and headed to a formal clothing store. He promptly purchased a black suit with a white silk shirt and a black tie before heading back to the hotel to meet up with his soon to be fiancé. Omari, Olivia, Mary, De’Mario, Jarell, Joy, and Midge were at Omari’s house watching a basketball game when it was interrupted with a news segment. The news caster, with his monotone voice said, “The man search is over everyone. The man responsible was Kevin Smith. He lived two blocks away from the bank and we even found bank bags in his home and the car a block away in an alley. When the authorities caught him he had been in the middle of leaving town. Upon inspecting his house they found blood on some clothes that were identified as the same blood type as the officers killed during the robbery. With all the evidence pointing to him there will be no trial and he was giving three life sentences without the option of parole. We, Channel 12 News, plan to get you posted on the latest news.” As the game came back one the small group of friends turned to look at each other and yelled in joy. They were all sure that eventually the police would find out that it was D and they were all glad that he was off the hook because the way it getting, they thought that they would never see their friends again. De’Mario popped a chip in his mouth before asking, “Do you think that they know yet?” “Probably not. I’m going to call and let them know,” Olivia said as she took out her cell phone. Druex was in the process of dressing for dinner when his cell phone rang. He quickly pulled his white wife beater over his head before answering the call with a hello. “Yo D you can come home man,” Olivia said excitedly over the phone. “What are you talking about?” Druex asked as he began buttoning his white silk shirt. “They found someone to pin the robbery on. Apparently someone robbed the truck after you left the site and ended up getting blood on them and everything. He’s been sent to jail without a trail so you’re off the hook,” Olivia replied. Druex paused shocked as hell. He had been ready to propose to Trish and hop a flight to Bahamas where he planned on them living for the next decade. He never thought of the chance of someone going in after him to take the money he had left behind. He suddenly thanked every God in existence as he saw that his life was open to all types of possibilities. He told Olivia thank you and that he would be back in NY in a few days then picked up the hotel phone and changed the tickets to the Bahamas to ones to New York. He knew that he would end up having to pay a fee for changing the destination so late in advance but it wasn’t like he was broke now. He made the change and continued to get dressed as Trish showered. Trish had finished showering off the sweat from her work out and towel dried her body before pulling on her black lace hipster panties. She then wrapped the towel around her body and left the bathroom. She made her way to the sink and grabbed her deodorant and smoothed it on before grabbing her lotion and heading to the bed. She unwrapped the towel and proceeded to smooth the lotion over her skin before calling over to Druex. “Wha…” Druex asked, trailing off as he saw her standing there in nothing but a pair of panties. “You act like you’ve never seen them before,” Trish said with a laugh as she threw her lotion bottle at him. He caught it before rolling his eyes at her. “For real though, I need you to put some on my back,” she said as she turned around. He quickly smoothed the lotion onto her soft skin before turning to finish getting dressed. Trish headed to her side of the bed and picked up the clothes she had set out before she jumped in the shower. It consisted of a brown silk dress that had a plunging v-neckline and looked to be short enough to stop just past her mid-thigh. She carefully slipped into the dress before sliding her feet into a brown pair of pumps. “So when are we going to the Bahamas?” Trish asked. “Not as soon as we were going to. As it happened, someone else robbed the truck after me and they got caught and are taking the fall for everything so we’re going home tomorrow,” Druex said. “Oh,” Trish said with a note of regret in her voice. Druex turned and smiled as he pulled his hair back into a neat ponytail. He then turned to her, grabbed her hand and led her out the room. It was later that same evening and Druex and Trish were in the middle of dinner when Druex decided to pop the question. “So Trish you know I was thinking about the future…our future and I was wondering where you saw us at in like ten years?” “Hopefully still together and maybe engaged,” Trish answered before taking a sip of her drink. “So you see us as being a forever type thing?” Druex asked. “No doubt,” Trish said as she gave him a quick wink. Druex reached into his pocket on the low and took out the box. He stared at Trish for a minute before saying, “Trish…will you be the Bonnie to my Clyde for the rest of our lives?” he asked. Trish laughed thinking it was one of his joking endearments and said, “Of course.” Druex lifted the box so that it was visible and opened it to reveal the beautiful ring. Trish began to choke on the food she just swallowed. Druex immediately got up and patted her on the back, drawing the attention of the few patrons in the restaurant. “Are you alright?” Druex asked once she settled down. Trish shook her head yes as tears began to form in her eyes. “Baby don’t cry,” Druex said as he took the ring out of the box and slid it on her left ring finger. “We’re getting married?” Trish asked in wonderment. “We’re getting married baby,” Druex conceded. |
